Murph’s Study Hall — A York Original

Murph’s Study Hall is located at 850 Jessop Pl in York, PA.
We are open and still a family-owned and operated bar,

Murph’s has a rich history that spans more than half a century.

The story begins in the 1960s, when this location was home to Snyder’s Ice Cream. By the late ’60s, it became Frank’s Steak Shop before undergoing a major transformation in 1972, when Art Murphy purchased the property.

Originally operating as a beer-only bar called The Watering Hole, Art later secured a full liquor license. On June 10, 1975, the bar reopened as Murph’s Study Hall—a name that would become a York institution.

In the early 1980s, ownership passed to his son, Tom Murphy, continuing the family legacy. In 2007, the Kanellakis family took over, and in 2017, Pete and Tina became the proud owners—keeping Murph’s a truly family-run business.

Like many establishments, Murph’s temporarily closed in 2020 due to state mandates. During that time, the bar was refreshed and renovated—coming back stronger than ever.

Through every chapter, Murph’s has remained a staple of the York community—one of the city’s oldest bars and a hidden gem just steps from York College.

Known for its nostalgic, welcoming atmosphere, Murph’s offers a safe, fun environment for both locals and students. With one of the largest dance floors in York, unbeatable happy hours, and some of the best drinks in town, Murph’s continues to deliver the kind of nights people come back for.

A true trendsetter, Murph’s helped introduce York to Trivia Nights, Music Bingo, and Black Light Parties. While others chased trends, Murph’s stayed true to what works—great music, a packed dance floor, and a bar that always feels like home.

Murph’s isn’t built on trends—
it’s built on good people, good drinks, and nights you don’t forget.

That’s why Murph’s is still here.

We’re grateful for the support this community has shown us through the years—and proud to keep the doors open for generations to come.
